Becoming Terrestrial: Sites of Reworlding in Creative and Cultural Institutions

Becoming Terrestrial is a two-day international conference at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, on outdoor ecological and experiential learning sites connected to museums, cultural institutions, schools, community spaces and university campuses.

Situated at the intersection of art, design, education and environmental thought and action, the conference considers how such sites operate as a “third space.” They are ecological infrastructures, and they are also places where knowledge is produced, shared and contested, and where the boundaries between art and everyday life, aesthetics and utility, and expertise and lived experience are unsettled.

Through talks, workshops, performances and screenings, contributors address participation, care, maintenance, temporality and the politics of sustainability, and how such sites might help institutions reworld, think otherwise and work towards liveable futures.

The program includes invited contributions from Dar Jacir, a project devoted to educational, cultural and agricultural exchange in Bethlehem; Kafkárna, the Centre for Arts and Ecology at UMPRUM, Prague; and tranzit.ro, a rural, long-term, multi-institutional platform for art and ecology in Romania.

The conference builds on research and teaching at NCAD FIELD, an ecological learning site at the centre of the College’s inner-city campus since 2020.
