OPEN CALL. Sustainable Art Production
Museo Reina Sofía welcomes applications for two research residencies, with an application deadline 8 October 2026 and a projected time frame between November 2026 and February 2027. The residencies will take place within the project Museum of the Commons, as part of its Climate strand within the L’Internationale network.
As part of Museum of the Commons, L'Internationale's project aimed at mobilising art and culture as strategic tools for fostering a more sustainable and responsible arts ecosystem, Museo Reina Sofía calls for two research residencies linked to the Climate strand of the project. This strand addresses issues related to the current global climate crisis, the sustainability of institutional, artistic and cultural practices and processes, and the urgent need to transform our policies, societies, cultures and ways of life towards ecologically sustainable models.
Some of the research lines proposed under this call include:
- Ecological, social and political sustainability of the cultural sector: tools, gestures, strategies and archives;
- Artistic and cultural research in times of climate crisis: new imaginaries, affects, languages and practices;
- Experiments in institutionality, architecture and organisational models from an ecological perspective;
- Research on food sovereignty; climate diasporas and migrant climate communities; and experiences involving gardens, community allotments and community kitchens, as well as the shared use and common ownership of natural resources.
Particular consideration will be given to projects that foster cross-disciplinary engagement between artistic practice, knowledge production and other fields of research, as well as to those demonstrating commitment to local communities, meaningful intersections with the Museum’s practices, and collaboration with the research network of the Study Centre.

The Soils Project
‘The Soils Project’ is part of an eponymous, long-term research initiative involving TarraWarra Museum of Art (Wurundjeri Country, Australia), the Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and Struggles for Sovereignty, a collective based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It works through specific and situated practices that consider soil, as both metaphor and matter.
Seeking and facilitating opportunities to listen to diverse voices and perspectives around notions of caring for land, soil and sovereign territories, the project has been in development since 2018. An international collaboration between three organisations, and several artists, curators, writers and activists, it has manifested in various iterations over several years. The group exhibition ‘Soils’ at the Van Abbemuseum is part of Museum of the Commons. -

This exchange programme gathers different schools organized by volunteers and migrant communities in Athens (Open School for Migrants) and Madrid (School of Rights, Escuela de Español and Situated mediation School) in order to share their knowledge, exchange strategies and reflect on the experience of working together with migrant communities.
