Maja Smrekar

, born 1978, Brežice, Slovenia, lives and works in Ljubljana. Her work tackles ideological structures in society. Grounded in sculpture, her practice-based artistic research has allowed her to lead and develop collaborative cross-conceptual productions, and to contribute to the exchange of knowledge in the context of lectures, talks and texts. Smrekar has presented her work at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana; the ZKM, Karlsruhe; Musée de l’Homme, Paris; Het Nieuwe Institut, Rotterdam; Latvian National Museum of Art, Riga; MK Gallery, Milton Keynes; Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing; Zürcher Gallery at Frieze New York; Transmediale, Berlin; Ars Electronica, Linz, and more. Smrekar’s work is part of Arteast 2000+ collection, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana. She was featured in the documentary Das Echo Der Zukunft, produced in 2019 for ARTE. In 2017 she won the Golden Nica, in the Hybrid Art category of the Prix Ars Electronica. In 2018 she was awarded the Prešeren Foundation Award, the highest national award for artistic achievements as recognised by the Republic of Slovenia.
