Wayne Modest

Wayne Modest, PhD is the Head of the Research Center for Material Culture (the research institute for the Tropenmuseum, Museum Volkenkunde and the Africa Museum), Professor of Material Culture and Critical Heritage Studies in the Humanities Faculty of the Vrij Universiteit Amsterdam. He was previously Head of the Curatorial Department at the Tropenmuseum, Keeper of Anthropology at the Horniman Museums and Gardens in London and Director of the Museums of History and Ethnography, Jamaica. He has held visiting research fellowships at the Yale Centre for British Art, Yale University and the School for Museums Studies, New York University, and the Department of Anthropology at Columbia University. His work is driven by a concern for more historically contingent ways of understanding the present, especially in relation to material culture. Modest's most recent publications include Museums and Communities: Curators, Collections, Collaborations (Bloomsbury Academic Publishers, edited with Viv Golding, 2013); the exhibition catalogue The Sixties: A Worldwide Happening (published by Lecturis, 2015, edited with Mirjam Shatanawi). He was also one of the guest editors for a recent special issue of the academic journal Patterns of Prejudice (2016. vol. 50, no. 2) together with Anouk de Koning entitled: "Anxious Politics and the European City".
